I worked as a freelance web developer on the side to help finance my education. The hardship of my life. Free Online Research Papers Hi, my name is Julie Ann Jacobs. I am the third of four kids, two older brothers and a younger sister. I was born on the 21st day of April in 1900 to the late Jules and Glenda Jacobs. The first place that was home was a rundown apartment in the Fisher Projects of Algiers, Louisiana. My father was determining not to have his children rise in such a place. He work hard as truck driver delving dairy products to local stores and school to save enough money to move his family to a better environment. My family saved up enough money to purchase a three bedroom home in Westwego Louisiana. A year and a half letter my sister was born. With the continues moving in and out of relatives I never really had my bed to sleep in. as a small child around the age of 7 or eight I can remember being molested by a close family member who by the way was not my father. This went on for a few years I was afraid to speak up for I didn’t know what my parent would do to that person. I couldn’t im age life without one of my parent. But that soon became a reality. On June 9th 2005 my father was found dead in the bed of his 18wheeler on Georgia. He had passed way of a diet betide coma. This was one of the worst days of my live. In august of the same year our lives were changed because of hurricane Katrina. It was my first week of high school and my family had to move away. For five month my mother my little sister and I had relocated to Donaldsonville Louisiana to stay with family. The living there was depressing. It was 15 people living in a three bedroom one and one-half bath house. I just couldn’t take it I became so depress I didn’t want to talked to anyone about my feelings. No matter who try to help I just pushed people away. This continued until finally in January of 2006 I convince my mother to move back to Westwego. We life I our mold infested home for about four month before we were giving a trailer to live in until the house was fix. But things didn’t get better they gotten worse. The mortgage company had raised the payment from about 400 dollars a month to almost 1000. Our total family income at the time was about 2500 a month that left us in debt. Our house need to be fix but insurance company only gave my mother 1600 dollar to repair when we at about 20thousan dollar worth of damage. My mother was my best friend she did everything she could do to make sure my sister and I had whatever we need. Doing so she neglected her own n eed she was under a lot of stress what to where to turn. And if all this wasn’t enough for her she had to go back and forward for Westwego to Donaldsonville to help care for my grandmother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer. On December 17 2007 I was awaken by a terrifying scream coming my mother room in the trailer. When I race in to see what was going o n my oldest brother was performing mouth to mouth and instructed me to call 911. Once I explain what was going on to the operator she said that help was on the way and hung up. What I saw when I look in to my mother eyes was he life slowly leaving the body. I knew then she was dead but I did want to believe it. The ambulance arrived about 10minutes after the second call made. When we made it to the hospital it was said she had suffer from an aneurism that left her brain dead and there was no hope for her. Our family struggle to pay for the funeral because she didn’t have life insurance. But through all the trail and tribulations with god and the help of family members a close friends I made it. I beat the odd and I made it. I was the of my parents children to graduate from high school. But why should it end there. Because I don’t have the money to continue I know I have what it take to make the grades in college but I don’t have what is need to go and that money. My father finished high school and my mother never finished college. I want to make. I want tell the children that I may have one day that they can make it. I don’t want to have to struggle anymore. Designs of Heat Exchangers Essay Heat transfer from one substance to another plays a major role in the process of some commonly use technology today. The heat transfer is done to control temperature, to heat up a cooler substance, or to cool down a hotter substance. This process is done by a machine called the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is commonly used in the space heating, in cooling of engines, refrigeration and other processes which need temperature control. They are classified according to their flow arrangement design. One is the parallel-flow design which the two substance flow from the same direction and exit at the same direction also. The other one is the counter-flow design on which the fluids flow on opposite direction. The last one is the cross-flow heat exchanger where the fluids flow perpendicular to each other (Heat Exchanger Design, Inc. 2009). Figure 1. Some are shell and tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, Regenerative heat exchangers and many others. The shell and tube design of the heat-exchanger consists of two sets of tubes. The first set of tubes is where the cooled or heated fluid flows and on the other set of tubes is the fluid that needed to be heated or cooled. The fluids are separated by the tube’s wall. This design ensures a better protection from leakage because of the tube design. So this design is ideal for the treatment of highly pressurize fluids (Kakac Liu 2002:8). The plate heat exchanger is consisting of multiple, thin and slightly separated plates which allow a larger fluid flow area fro heat transfer. It is said to be more effective than the shell and tube design because it provides more surface area for heat transfer. Additionally, the plate heat exchangers have recent developments on its brazing and gasket that makes it practical to use than other heat exchangers. However, the plate heat exchanger is needs a lot of space and it is more susceptible to leakage (Wang, Sunden Manglik 2007). The regenerative heat exchangers are heat exchangers that make use of the heated fluid after a process to be the heating fluid for the next process. This design can be on a plate or shell and tube structure. The advantages of this type are adapted from the design it is structured. Furthermore, this design brought an economical perspective to the first two designs. On the other hand, this design is only intended for the use of gas substances as fluids (Saunders 1988). Figure 4. The disadvantage of this design is that there will be a small mixing of the two streams in the process of heat transfer (Saunders 1988). The plate fin heat exchanger is highly used in different industries. The plate-fin heat exchangers utilize plates and finned chambers for relatively high heat transfer. It is preferred by other industries because of its ability to transfer heat with to small difference between the streams. Additionally, it has a compact design and is very lightweight (Kakac Liu 2002:17). Another type is the fluid heat exchangers. The process being done is by showering fluids to a gas stream in an upward direction. The process is used in machines that needed gas cooling and purification at the same time (Saunders 1988). Thermal Fluid Heat Exchanger (Thermotech Industries n. d. ) A waste heat recovery unit is a heat exchanger that recovers waste heat from other mechanism and uses it to transfer heat the fluid being heating. This design is very desirable for refineries and plants since they have an abundant amount of waste heat from their machineries. This design is very economical since waste recycled to something useful (Saunders 1988). Figure 7. Waste Heat Recovery Unit (Turner 2005) Dynamic or scraped surface heat exchangers are heat exchangers that have high maintenance cost because of the constant surface scraping. The scraping is due to the process these machines are used. Such processes are heating and cooling of high-viscosity fluids and other highly fouling substance. However, this design has a sustainable heat transfer and it avoids fouling of the surface of transfer (Saunders 1988). Figure 8. These heat exchangers either heat a liquid to boil and evaporate or cool hot gases to condense. This process is common in distillation set ups. The distillation is a process of which a liquid is heated up and cooled down to remove impurities. It is also used in power plants such as nuclear power plants and fossil fuel plants. These power plants usually use steam driven turbines to generate electricity. In which the steam came from the heat exchange between the heater and the liquid (Saunders 1988). The heat exchangers above are heat exchangers which utilizes a wall to separate the two streams of liquids. The classifications above are based on the design of which how the two streams are separated. However, there are other heat exchangers that do not use walls or separators. These are called direct contact heat exchangers. These heat exchangers use two different phases in heat transfer (Saunders 1988). Figure 9. Selecting a proper heat exchanger can be a challenging task. It requires technical knowledge about the designs since there are many factors to be taken into consideration. Some are temperature ranges, the composition of the substance to be heated and pressure limits. That is why the decision about the design is made by a computer program or an engineer. Additionally, large companies and corporations tend to design their own heat exchanger to tend to their needs (Wang, Sunden Manglik 2007). Emotional Fundamentalism in River of Earth Essay -- Literary Analysis

James Still's River of Earth presents the bleak realities faced by an Appalachian family that struggles with meeting their most basic needs. The Baldridge's struggle with poverty is surely representative of many Appalachian families during the Depression era. The hardships of poverty, and its psychological and physical effects, are worsened by the isolation and sense of helplessness felt by the characters within River of Earth. Religion functions as the combatant to these struggles; the form of Christianity offered by Still strays from the standard fundamentalist fire-and-brimstone preachings often associated with evangelism in the Appalachian region. Instead, a more emotional form of fundamentalism is found. Religion is a positive, empowering force that is both spiritually and socially freeing for the otherwise repressed and isolated characters within the novel. Within the text, Still offers little escape for the characters. They are grounded and focused on the realities at hand. There is little indulgence in fanciful things or things not of this world. Religion is one of the few escapes the characters are allowed. Still does not offer a standard fundamentalist take on Christianity, despite the strong fundamentalist strains that are often associated with Appalachia. Generally, fundamentalism strongly emphasizes innate depravity and the damnation sinners face. Instead, Still lightens the message. Sermons on hope, grace, and mercy are extended to the characters. Through this more forgiving variety of Christianity, the characters are able to look forward to an eternal existence without adding any more stress to their current existences. The isolation and desperation found in Depression-era rural Appalachia greatly influenced the type of Christianity that involved in the region. The need for society, community, control, and most significantly, optimism, spawned a form of Christianity that was both social and accommodating to sensitive emotional needs.
